I hope you are all doing well and staying healthy. Today at the MCAN meeting we offered a Suicide Prevention QPR Presentation which many of your attended. I promised to send out some resources, please see the attached documents and links below to learn more. As we discussed, there are several factors that lead to completed suicides in Montana, we know that restricting access to fatal means is vital to keeping our youth safe from an often-impulsive act. Remember Means Matters: Responsibly store your firearms unloaded, locked and out of reach and sight of kids and youth with ammunition locked and stored separately. Also, lock up your medication and consider keeping Narcan on hand, so you have it available for opioid overdoses (works for kids and dogs). Montana pharmacies have an open prescription, so if you have opioids in your home (or grandparents’ home) make sure you also have Narcan. Grief Resources: Grief After Suicide—see attached pdf. Tamarack Grief Resource Center Montana’s most comprehensive grief center in Missoula, Kalispell, and Browning. They also offer online resources. National Alliance for Children’s Grief: GriefTalk Schools Resource Guides Supporting a Friend who is Grieving: 8th to 12 Grade Youth Suicide Resources: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention: Teens and suicide: What parents should know Crisis Textline: Text MT to 741 741 Trevor Project for LGBTQ+ Youth: Text START to 678678 or call 1.866.488.7386 Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255 School Resources: Preventing Suicide a toolkit for high schools—see attached Montana Resources: Suicide in Montana: Facts, Figures and Formulas for Prevention: See attached.
